Absorption spectra of preferentially aligned M centers in Kl were measured with polarized light at 20.5, 77.4, and 243 °K. The band maxima, halfwidths, and relative intensities of the (M 1 , M 4 , M 2 , and M 2 bands and the peak position of other anisotropies (M 3 , M 5 , M 6 , M 7 , M 3 , M 5 , M 7 ) were determined from dichroic difference spectra. The results have been compared with M‐center data for other alkali halides and the origins of the various anisotropies have been considered.
