Experimental results are reported obtained on additively and substractively coloured SrCI 2 crystals. By means of combined optical and ESR experiments the position of the F‐band could be located. It was found that 0 2‐ impurities play an important role in the additive and substractive colouration process. The presence of O 2‐ ions very strongly enhances the coagulation rate of electron excess centres formed during additive colouration. Models for radiation damage processes in O 2‐ doped SrCI 2 crystals are discussed.
