The influence of interatomic interaction between the electrons on the occurrence of ferro‐magnetism in a nondegenerate narrow band is investigated. Using the Green's function technique it is shown that the unperturbed band splits due to the interatomic interaction into spin‐polarized sub‐bands. For a simple cubic tight‐binding band the ground state energy for the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic configurations are calculated and compared. It is found that in the strongly correlated limit and for sufficiently large number of electrons per atom the ferromagnetic state is stable.
