Perturbation theory has been used to derive the shift of the energy levels of a Γ 8 system under the effect of a uniaxial stress applied along the [110] axis. The results are correct up to second order in the perturbation parameter f/g ( f/g is the ratio between cubic and linear terms in spin variables of the unstressed spin‐Hamiltonian), and up to second order in the stress. The formalism could also be extended to include higher order terms. The results are valid for all values of the angular variable provided that − 1/6 < f/g < 1/9. Otherwise for certain angles, some expressions become invalid.
