The high‐pressure stability of the ionic cubic lattices is considered in terms of the recently proposed “combined stability criterion”. It appears now that the phase transformation in alkali halides takes place spontaneously once the high‐pressure CsCl‐polymorph becomes mechanically stable. The relation between the new criterion and the classical thermodynamics is discussed. New experiments are suggested in order to check some of the theoretical conclusions and predictions.
