If the thermal expansion of a lattice with periodic boundary conditions is calculated exactly, the result is zero. An expression is derived for the thermal expansion is of a monatomic linear chain with free ends using the exact normal modes and it is shown that this result may be reproduced to thermodynamic accuracy by using at some stage of the calculation, normal modes appropriste to a periodic chain.
