Using an EFP absorption spectrometer the pair interaction of Yb 3+ ions was stukdied in YAsO 4 crystals. Also an investigation of the relaxation behaviour was performed concerning with the temperature and angular dependence of hte relaxation times of the isolated ions. The relaxation is partially affected by cross relaxation between the single ions and the Yb 3+ ion pairs. The direct process at the lowest temperatures is bottlenecked.
