A temprature modulation of the optical absorption, x, and the reflection coefficient, R , in tellurium is made for the first time by a periodicallyi haeating CO 2 ‐laser beam. For highlyi doped tellukrium the thermoreflection spectra show a stong temperature and polarisation dependence and are discussed as far as fpossible in terms of xisting energy band models. Thermoabsorption in the optical band‐gap region may be interpreted by indirect transitions and show that the temperature dependence of the band gap is not the dominating process.
