Extended dislocations may be excited to internal periodic oscillations. The eigen‐frequencies are found to be proportional to the stacking fault energy and to be of the order of 10 10 s −1 for common metals. The effect of several damping mechanisms on these vibrations is investigated quantitatively. Furthermore the possibility of an experimental demonstration of the eigen‐frequencies by means of acoustic resonance experiments is discussed.
