The spatial charge displaced by an impurity is calculated using the T ‐matrix formalism together with the aid of Green's function theory. For a certain class of T ‐matrices an exact result, which explicitly obeys the Friedel sum rule is obtained. In other cases it represents an improved preasymptotic form.
