The contribution of the band structure energy to the energy of a screw dislocation in a metal is calculated within the framework of pseudopotential theory. The total energy of the dislocation is the sum of the change in electrostatic energy of the point‐ion lattice and the band structure energy. Numerical results are given for the alkali metals using Ashcroft's atom form factors.
