The electric field induced changes of the 1S and 2S exciton states created at the E 0 1and E 0 1± Δ 0 transitions in cuprous oxide have been investigated. The ground exciton states exhibit polarization effects which have been attributed to the action of the applied field on electronic wave functions. A removal of the degeneracy of the Γ 8 −conduction band is suggested.
