The temperature dependence of the two near infrared absorption bands of AgCl:C 2+ and AgBr:Cr 2+ has been measured. The low‐energy band having a temperature independent oscillator strength is assigned to the transition between the splitting levels of the 5 E g ground state. This splitting of about 6000 cm −1 is interpreted as due to a dynamic Jahn‐Teller effect. The high‐energy band is assigned to the → 5 T 2g transition.
