Polarized luminescence is observed for In ++ (h v m I = 2.12 eV) and In ++ v   c −(h v m I = 1.75eV) centres in X‐irradiated KCl:In. Spectral and polarization characteristics of the luminescence are investigated. The symmetry of excited In ++ centres is established to be tetragonal. The energy level diagram and the possible models of the In ++ centres in the ground and excited electronic states are considered. It is assumed that In ++ and In ++ v   c −centres in the excited state may be represented as In + Cl   2 −and In + v   c − Cl   2 −quasimolecules, respectively.
