A general analysis is made of the effect of uniaxial stress on optical transitions between localized electronic states in wurtzite‐type crystals. The energy shift, the splitting pattern, and the polarization of no‐phonon lines are derived for the different defect symmetries and stress directions. It is shown that the piezospectroscopy of defects in wurtzite‐type crystals enables an unambiguous determination of the symmetry group of the defect and may yield valuable informations on the symmetry of the electronic states involved.
