Paramagnetic resonance at K‐, Q‐, and X‐band frequencies and optical absorption spectrum of trivalent dysprosium have been investigated in single crystals of yttrium arsenate within a temperature range from 1.7 to 15 K. The measurements indicate, that there is a linear Zeeman splitting parallel and a nonlinear Zeeman splitting perpendicular to the c‐axis of the crystal for the two lowest ground‐level doublets. The energetic distance of these doublets at zero magnetic field is ΔW = (1.35 ± 0.03) cm −1 . A spin Hamiltonian is given with effective spin S = 3/2, which describes the observed Zeeman effect of the two doublets lying close together.
