The spectral dependence of the piezobirefringence coefficients of NaCl, KCl, LiF, CaF 2 , SrF 2 , and BaF 2 , at room temperature is measured. From these results values for the shear deformation potentials of the energy bands are obtained. The LiF data suggest that the lowest interband edge occurs along [lll], a situation unique among the alkali halides. The data for the alkaline‐earth fluorides indicate a rather complicated structure for the lowest absorption edge.
