The phonon spectra of the Laves phase of C14 structure (AB 2 ‐type intermetallic compounds) and the inelastic neutron scattering cross section according to the creation and annihilation of phonons are investigated using group theory. For MgZn 2 model potential calculations of phonon spectra are made along the line of highest symmetry in the Brillouin zone using Shaw's potential. Very low lying optical branches are found.
