A semi‐empirical formulation of the optical properties of U 2 centres is presented which incorporates a many‐body treatment of electronic properties in terms of the concept of the electronic polaron. The results of the analysis provide further confirmation for the model which attributes the optical absorption process of the U 2 centre to the transfer of an electron from the surrounding halide ions onto the interstitial hydrogen atom.
