Optical absorption and emission of NaCl crystals doped with different silver concentrations and containing various contaminations of calcium and oxygen were investigated. The amounts of silver, calcium, and oxygen were determined by neutron activation analysis. Two absorption bands at 250 and 260 nm show the same temperature dependence between 80 and 300 °K as the F centre absorption in NaCl. Silver and oxygen are necessary for the centre, but our data provide no conclusive evidence that calcium is involved. The emission spectrum consists of three distinct bands at 350, 380, and 450 nm, which are interpreted.
