Powder neutron diffraction measurements were performed on ErPO 4 and ErVO 4 at temperatures as low as 2 K and in external magnetic fields up to 30 kOe. No magnetic ordering could be detected. The ensueing susceptibility measurements and an estimate of the magnetic dipole interactions lead to an transition temperature of about 0.8 K, with the interaction being probably purely dipolar with negligible exchange interaction.
