Starting from the integral equation for the self‐consistent potential it is shown that the eigenfrequencies of the collective oscillations form a discrete spectrum. According to the calculations for argon the spectrum covers a rather narrow band of frequencies 3×10 16 S −1 ≦ ≦ ω ≦ 10 17 S −1 . The value of the estimated damping decrement γ ≈ 7 × 10 15 S −1 indicates that at frequencies of about 10 17 S −1 the proposed plasma mechanism will be predominant in the absorption and emission processes of radiation. It is expected that the considered collective states may be observed in X‐ray emission and absorption spectra of solids as well as of gases.
