Abstract The Mössbauer emission spectrum of 57 Co in CoFe 2 O 4 is reported. Electron capture leads to the formation of 57 Fe 3+ substituting 57 Co 2+ . The stabilization of the aliovalent charge state is consistent with an electrostatic model.
