The tunneling probability W is investigated in an asymmetric double well in which the asymmetry varies with time as the particle “starts to tunnel”. A relaxation time is introduced to account for this variation of the double well, and it is found that W is always larger than in the corresponding rigid double well. This model should apply to several phenomena in which an ion or small molecule changes position through tunneling in a crystal.
