Magnetic circular dichroism was measured in the U 2 bands in KCl, KBr, KI, RbBr, RbI, and CsI. By an analysis of the data using the method of moments the spin‐orbit splitting of the excited states was determined. Absorption spectra of the U 2 centres in RbBr, RbI, CsBr, and CsI and some of the optical properties of these compounds are also reported.
