Experimental investigations are made of the infrared transmission spectra of MgO and ZnS in the region of the fundamental lattice absorption at room temperature. The magnitude of the effect of anharmonicity has been calculated and discussed in the light of symmetry of spectra at the resonance frequencies. The effective ionic charge and compressibility of Szigeti's relations are calculated and the significance of these results is discussed from the point of view of various models of dielectric behaviour.
