It is shown, that the excitonic wave functions exhibit a discontinuity at the transition between free and bound states. In the real case where carriers spend a finite time on excited levels, it is possible to neglect the Coulomb interaction when the two particles have a kinetic energy greater than a few Rydbergs. Using this hypothesis, an absorption curve in good agreement with the experimental results on GaAs is calculated.
