A new theory of the vibronic absorption spectra of molecular crystals, which is a generalization of the usual exciton theory, is suggested. It allows to consider, in principle, both one‐phonon and many‐phonon vibronic excitations. An investigation of the vibronic states corresponding to the combination of the electronic excitation with the intramolecular totally symmetrical vibrations is made for the case of a change of the vibrational frequency and a small variation of the equilibrium of the normal vibrational coordinate during the electronic excitation of the molecule. Expressions for the shape of the vibronic absorption spectra are obtained.
