This Special Issue assembles 27 Feature Articles reviewing latest achievements in the research on “Nanowires and nanotubes: From controlled synthesis to functions”. The articles reflect the results of a tight cooperation between groups from physics, chemistry and materials science in this field of research. The work was supported by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) within its Priority Program SPP 1165 (see also the Preface by Margit Zacharias on p. 2303 ). Starting from a deeper understanding of the growth process, the synthesis of various kinds of nanowires and nanotubes is demonstrated either in free space, within templates or in a pattern arrangement. Future prospects in the field include the development of functional device elements from ordered nanowires and nanotubes and concepts for three‐dimensionally connecting such device elements. The images on the front cover show gold dots on a GaN surface (left‐most image), ZnO nanowires grown on a photoresist patterned Au structure on silicon (center image), ZnO nanowires grown on GaN/sapphire after nanosphere lithography (monolayer – top left; bilayer – bottom right), a ZnO nanowire overgrown by an alumina shell (top right) and a ZnO nanowire field‐effect transistor with tungsten contacts (bottom center).
