The components of the nonlinear optical susceptibility tensor [ d ijk SHG ] (SHG tensor) of the melilite‐type tetragonal germanate Ba 2 MgGe 2 O 7 , that allows phase matched second harmonic generation and sum frequency generation in a wide spectral range, were determined using the Maker fringes method. The values of the components amount about one third of d 36 SHG of KH 2 PO 4 (KDP). Effective nonlinear susceptibilities for SHG phase matching directions are given for different wavelengths.
