We present pressure‐dependent infrared transmittance measurements on fullerene C 70 at room temperature in the pressure range up to 4 GPa. The vibrational modes of C 70 exhibit a nearly linear pressure dependence with a sluggish anomaly at around 0.8 GPa. This anomaly could be attributed to the change in the orientational ordering of the C 70 molecules. The sluggish character of the transition could be either due to the continuous change of the orientational order or the coexistence of two phases in the solid C 70 .
