The present special issue entitled Frontiers in Molecular‐Beam Epitaxy toward Novel Devices has been prepared to honor Klaus H. Ploog on the occasion of his 65th birthday and pays tribute to his long scientific career, during which he performed continuously outstanding research, always at the frontiers of molecular‐beam epitaxy. This issue of physica status solidi (b) consists of 27 contributions from leading scientists around the world covering GaAs‐based heterostructures, dilute nitride alloys with antimony, IV–VI semiconductors and nanocrystals, semiconductor quantum dots, group‐III nitride films and nanocolumns, quantum‐cascade lasers, magnetic materials such as (Ga,Mn)As as well as spin relaxation and spin lifetimes. As emphasized in the laudatio by Gerhard Abstreiter, Klaus Ploog has enormously contributed to each and every one of these fields throughout his career, often resulting in new advances that had a major impact in the fields of in‐situ monitoring of molecular‐beam‐epitaxial growth, semiconductor nanostructures, ferromagnet–semiconductor hybrid structures, and solid state physics. In addition to providing an appropriate tribute to Klaus Ploog's long scientific career, we hope that this issue will stimulate the exploitation of new directions of these emerging and rapidly developing fields. We are sure that all contributors, colleagues, and collaborators join us in wishing Klaus Ploog a very enjoyable retirement with lots of new discoveries not only within but also outside the scientific life.
