Abstract Constants characterising the efficiency of far‐infrared (FIR) photon coupling to phonon sum and difference combination processes are elucidated from existing experimental data in CdTe and ZnTe crystals. Two‐phonon difference processes are concluded to play leading role in the FIR absorption in the range of 1–4 THz. LO phonon band population inversion relative to LA band at the same phonon momentum is revealed in electric field acting on the conduction‐band electrons using Monte Carlo method. Radiative decay of acumulated LO phonons and daughter TO and LA phonons is considered. (© 2007 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
