Based on two‐colour spectroscopy, we identify origin of infrared emissions in Cr doped ZnSe. Near infrared emission at about 0.98 μm is related to Cr 2+ intra‐shell process. Optical memory effect is observed related to metastability of light induced Cr 1+ population. This effect can be used for optical detection of THz radiation. (© 2007 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
