We reanalyze the strong‐coupling expansion for the Holstein model in the limit of low and medium phonon frequencies. We focus on the interplay between the dynamical phonon dressing of the electrons and the static phonon distortion in the bipolaronic charge order (CO) phase. We propose a variational approach to this problem and obtain an expression for the ground state energy. (© 2007 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
