The magnetic translation group describes the symmetry of the itinerant electron on two‐dimensional lattice with perpendicular magnetic field. For such a finite system, with periodic condition the properties of the irreducible representations of this group are responsible for the tight‐binding analogue of cyclotron orbits of the free electron case. The relation between the size of the planar lattice and the structure of the group and its irreducible representations is pointed out. (© 2007 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
