Two different scenarios of controlling occupations and coherences of a quantum dot are discussed. In both cases two wave packets travelling through a quantum wire are used. In the first scenario the two wave packets are generated at both sides of the dot and the coherence is controlled by transport mechanisms. In the second scenario the wave packets are generated at the same spot so that the occupations and coherence are strongly affected by the interference between the laser pulses. Additionally in the latter scenario we show the crossover from the pulse shaping induced coherent control to the control by means of transport. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
