Abstract In this paper, we study the transmission properties of the light through the aperiodic multilayers vertically following the three‐component Thue–Morse (3CTM) sequence. On the basis of the electromagnetic wave theory we present a so‐called decomposition‐substitution (DS) method to analyze the characteristics of the transmission directly and concisely. After predicting the transmission properties from the structure by means of the DS method, we then deduce the formulae of propagation matrices and transmission coefficients analytically and obtain the numerical simulations at the same time. The results obtained by three kinds of method accord with each other. It is found that the 3CTM systems possess an interesting tristable transmissive characteristic, which would be useful for designing some optical tristable devices. (© 2007 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
