Signals ascribed to the 1s, 2s and 3s exciton states of epitaxial ZnSe are observed in experiments aimed at detecting the coherent spin‐flip of conduction band electrons under simultaneous microwave and laser excitation of a ZnSe sample in a magnetic field. The origin of these unexpected signals is investigated, since they must arise from non‐idealities in the experiment which could represent a limiting factor in its application to semiconductor heterostructures. It is shown that both magnetic circular dichroism and magnetic linear dichroism effects could lead to the observation of such signals. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
