In this paper we show that, under resonance condition, the pressure coefficient of the n ‐th order longitudinal optical (LO) phonon determined by Raman scattering at low temperature exhibits a linear dependence on n . This linear dependence arises from a quadratic dependence of the LO phonon pressure coefficient on the phonon wave vector. The results of the theoretical calculation are in qualitative agreement with recently reported experimental results in CdS [I. H. Choi and P. Y. Yu, phys. stat. sol. (b) 242 , 2813 (2005)].
