Taking into account the intratube curvature and intertube coupling effects, we develop a tight‐binding approach to study the electronic structure in carbon nanotube bundles. It is found that the curvature develops a small energy gap in the electronic density of states of a zigzag nanotube, while the intertube coupling decreases the gap width. The competition between the two factors may lead to creation or destruction of the energy gap in the carbon nanotube bundles. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
