This paper considers the recent history, current developments and future directions of studies of phonon interactions in semiconductor nanostructures, e.g superlattices and quantum wells, wires and dots. The motivation for studying such systems is discussed and a few of the major achievements highlighted. Current projects underway in Nottingham on phonon assisted tunnelling and monochromatic phonon generation in superlattices are reviewed as examples of where the subject is at today. Finally, the future prospects for this area are speculated upon. (© 2004 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
