Nonlinear optical response of copper and silver nanoparticles synthesized by ion implantation in silicate glasses was investigated in ultraviolet range (354.7 nm). The real and imaginary parts of the third‐order nonlinear susceptibility χ (3) of composite materials were measured. It was shown that Im χ (3) was connected with saturable absorption whereas Re χ (3) was due to self‐defocusing of laser radiation in materials.
