We measured the emission spectra under strong excitation above the band gap using femtosecond pulses and observed the exciton Mott transition at high temperature and the liquid–gas transition below 160 K from temperature and excitation density dependences of emission spectra. From these results we determined the phase diagram of electron–hole system in diamond.
