The spin‐1/2 Falicov–Kimball model is analyzed perturbatively in the large U limit. In the case of 2D square lattice, the effective Hamiltonian up to terms proportional to U –3 has been obtained, and its ground states have been determined for a range of chemical potentials. The resulting phase diagram appeared to be qualitatively the same as that one for the spinless model. This is rather surprising result, because the effective Hamiltonians are quite different in the both cases.
