From optical investigations of the R 2 zero‐phonon absorption line in γ‐ and X‐irradiated KCl under uniaxial stress at low temperatures the 2 E ground state of the R‐centre is suggested to be split without external field. Measuring the changes of integral absorption and of energetic position of the line for stress along 〈100〉, a zero‐field splitting of 2 Z = 0.9 cm −1 is found. This result is confirmed from studying the spectral shift of the line when the crystal is cooled from 4.2 to 1.5 °K. The results are analysed using the zeroth and first moments of the line. The origin of the zero‐field splitting is discussed.
