The optical absorption spectrum of trivalent erbium in single crystals of yttrium arsenate is measured in the range from 15000 to 29000 cm −1 and analysed with a crystal field of 4 2m symmetry. The values of the five crystal field parameters of the arsenate are compared with those of the isostructural phosphate and vanadate. Differences and similarities are discussed.
