This paper presents experimental data about the absorption band of the stretching vibration of OH − in RbCl, KBr, and KCl, and about the field‐ and stress‐induced dichroism of this band at low temperatures. For small concentrations ( N OH < 10 −4 ) the spectrum was found to consist of a single band with a halfwidth ≦ 0.1 cm −1 (LHeT). The experiments about the dichroism clearly indicate that for RbCl and KBr the molecule axis of the OH − is pointing along 〈100〉. For OH − in KCl the results are more complicated and cannot be explained completely. However, the general model of a 〈100〉 dipole seems to hold also for this system.
