Fluorescence and absorption ultraviolet spectra of Ce 3+ : YPO 4 are reported. They appear as bands which are assigned to 4f ↔ 5d transitions. From fluorescence quantum efficiency measurements the values of the parameters A   2 0(9014 cm −1 ), A   4 0(45320 cm −1 ), and A   4 4(5406 cm −1 ) characterizing the crystal field acting on the 5d states of Ce 3+ :YPO 4 are obtained.
