Abstract A calculation of the cross sections for polycristalline bismuth and aluminium is presented. Various methods are applied to calculate the incoherent part and the interference part of the cross section. A description of the scattering is obtained which is valid for the whole range of neutron energies. Previous treatments are critically discussed.
